When we think of strength training, we tend to ONLY think about our muscles. But the reality is, we are training so much more than that. We’re also training our bones. Strength training increases bone density and even has the power to reverse the effects of osteoporosis. When we build strength, we also strengthen our connective tissues like the tendons and ligaments. Cartilage will also become thicker, which does wonders in decreasing joint pain and stiffness.
The stronger we are and the more muscle mass we have, the higher our basal metabolic rate goes. This means our body will need to burn more calories at a resting state to maintain physiological function, which is the function of our organs. It also means that visceral fat, the dangerous abdominal fat that surrounds our vital organs, like the heart and liver, will likely DECREASE.
So the next time you enter the gym for your strength training session, remember that you’re not only training your muscles. You’re also training your organs. Your entire human structure. And your health and vitality!
