BURDEN (A BLACK WOMAN’S STORY) 🎨

Throughout our history, the Black woman carried the weight of democracy. She bore the agony of children ripped from her, even as she nursed the babes of her tormentors. She suffered the physical pain, stooped to pick the crop that assured a thriving economy. She wore the bruises and humiliation of beatings and r**e. She grieved as sons were led off to jail or hung from trees. She cried tears of sorrow for the husband fighting for a nation that would deny him equality. The burden on her shoulders could be seen.
But she has turned! Today, she marches. Today, she organizes. Today, she runs and leads.
The burden has not lifted. But today, the back is straight; the voice is bold. Democracy will again stand on her shoulders. But in a vastly different and powerful way.

Today the Naked Truth Team had the pleasure of meeting with Mayor Paul Young to discuss our ongoing efforts to redevelop a neglected part of town known as Smokey City in North Memphis. The goal is to establish a thriving community where artists and creative minds come together to hone their talents and solve issues that we as a society face everyday. #901

AMERICA’S BLUE WALL OF SHAME

Any one of us can be at risk, nameless.... until we are not. The truth of that fear has come to me twice.
One of those incidents occurred years ago, when I was traveling the country working festivals, on a trip from Memphis to Dallas, I was tiring and stopped around midnight at a 7-11 near Texarkana for a coffee. When I returned to my vehicle, instead of getting in, I walked around a few minutes to stretch my legs. I heard police sirens, and suddenly, two patrol cars screeched to a halt in front of me and officers emerged ordering me to lie down and were, just as suddenly, on top of me, demanding ID. It was late at night. I was by myself. I was scared. Apparently, the white girl inside the store was frightened when I didn’t immediately get in the vehicle to leave; afraid that I would return to rob her. It was my first encounter with police.
Like myself, this happens to many African Americans, cutting across economic and educational line: recalling my own late night police encounters, the chilling thought of the “Blue wall of shame”.
