We are pleased to announce a recent publication in the Journal of Clinical Psychology, based on results from The Surviving Traumatic Loss Project.
This paper was the first to explore groups of bereavement-need patterns, what factors predicted those patterns, and how different need patterns are associated with different outcomes among survivors of traumatic loss (su***de, fatal overdose, and sudden-natural causes). Overall, individuals in the “High Needs” group rated meaning making and informational the highest, and also had the most difficult outcomes (high levels of prolonged grief symptoms, PTSD, depression, and su***de risk).

Overdose deaths were the highest ever recorded during the pandemic with over 88,000 tragic deaths. Sadly, the CDC just reported that the previous year surpassed that sobering statistic, with over 93,000 overdose deaths in 2020.
A body of research, including results from the Surviving Traumatic Loss Project, show that survivors are at risk for a number of adverse consequences. With the continued rise in overdose deaths, we need to know more about the consequences of this traumatic form of loss, and how to best support the bereaved.
Please share or participate today. It’s never been more important.
