Self-contained breathing apparatus, also known as an SCBA, is used by firefighters when the atmosphere is dangerous to life by the presence of heat, gases, smoke, or low oxygen levels. This type of danger can occur on incidents like fires, hazardous materials incidents, and rescues of victims in unknown atmospheres. There are three main components of the system – a pressurized tank, a pressure regulator, and a facemask – that are held together and mounted on a backpack type frame. SCBA is a vital piece of equipment that CAL FIRE firefighters can use in their rescue and recovery efforts.
