Your knee pain may not actually be a knee problem. đ
One of the biggest surprises for patients is learning that the location of pain isnât always the source of the problem.
For example, weakness or poor control around the hips can sometimes increase stress on the knee during activities like:
đ Running
đś Walking
đď¸ Squatting
đď¸ Going up and down stairs
Thatâs why effective rehabilitation often looks beyond the painful area.
As physical therapists, weâre not just asking, âWhere does it hurt?â
Weâre asking:
â
Why does it hurt?
â
Whatâs contributing to the problem?
â
What can we improve to reduce stress on that area?
The body works as a connected system, and sometimes the key to solving pain is addressing a completely different area.
Donât just treat the symptomâlook for the source.

The perfect posture doesnât exist. đ
For years, people have been told that sitting with âbad postureâ is the reason for their pain.
The truth is a little more complicated.
As physical therapists, we know that the body is designed to move. Even the most âperfectâ posture can become uncomfortable if you stay in it for hours at a time.
Thatâs why one of my favorite sayings is:
The best posture is your next posture.
Instead of stressing about sitting perfectly all day, focus on:
â
Changing positions frequently
â
Standing up throughout the day
â
Taking short walks
â
Moving your body regularly
Movement and variety are often more important than maintaining one perfect position.
Your body is resilient and adaptable.
So stop chasing perfect posture and start chasing more movement.

Recovery isnât a straight line. đ
One of the biggest mistakes people make during recovery is expecting to feel better every single day.
The reality?
Healing rarely works that way.
Some days youâll feel stronger.
Some days youâll feel sore.
Some days youâll feel like youâre making great progress.
And some days youâll wonder if youâre moving backward.
That doesnât necessarily mean something is wrong.
Recovery is often a series of ups and downs that trend in the right direction over time.
Instead of focusing on todayâs pain compared to yesterdayâs, ask yourself:
â
Am I moving better than I was a few weeks ago?
â
Am I stronger than I was a month ago?
â
Am I able to do more of the activities I enjoy?
Those are often much better indicators of progress.
Remember: one bad day doesnât erase weeks of hard work.
Stay consistent.
Stay patient.
Trust the process.
Your body is adapting even when progress isnât obvious.

Ice or heat? đ§đĽ
One of the most common questions we get in physical therapy is:
âShould I use ice or heat?â
The answer is⌠it depends.
Ice can help temporarily calm irritation and reduce pain, especially after something has been aggravated.
Heat can help relax muscles and make stiffness feel more manageable.
But hereâs the part most people donât hear:
Neither ice nor heat is likely to solve the underlying issue on its own.
They can help you feel better temporarily, which can be valuable, but lasting improvement usually comes from addressing the root cause through movement, strength, mobility, and gradual progression.
Think of ice and heat as toolsânot cures.
The goal isnât just to feel better for an hour.
The goal is to help your body become stronger, more resilient, and better able to handle the activities you enjoy.

Your MRI may not be telling the whole story. đ
Seeing words like âdisc bulge,â âarthritis,â or âdegenerationâ on an MRI report can be scary.
But hereâs what many people donât realize:
Research has shown that many people with NO pain have these same findings on imaging.
Thatâs because MRIs show what structures look likeâthey donât always explain why someone is hurting.
Pain is complex. It can be influenced by:
â
Strength
â
Movement habits
â
Activity levels
â
Sleep
â
Stress
â
Overall health
Imaging can be an important tool, but itâs only one piece of the puzzle.
If youâve ever been told that youâre âbrokenâ because of an MRI finding, remember this:
Your body is adaptable, resilient, and often much stronger than you think.
Donât let an image define what youâre capable of doing.
