Today we celebrate 250 years of freedom, resilience, and the American spirit.

As you enjoy backyard BBQs, pool parties, beach days, and fireworks, remember that the best celebrations end with everyone home safely.

💦 Designate a Water Watcher. Switch every 15-20 minutes.
🛟 Keep new and non-swimmers within arm’s reach.
🚫 Skip the floaties. Choose Coast Guard-approved life jackets when needed.
👀 If your child wears a life jacket in the pool, keep it on until they are completely away from the pool area, even during breaks.
💙Remove pool toys and other water temptations when you’re done swimming to help prevent children from being drawn back to the water.
❤️ Learn CPR. It saves lives.

It happens much more often than we’d like to admit.

You’re at a pool party.

There are grandparents.

Aunts.

Uncles.

Friends.

Older siblings.

Everyone assumes someone else is keeping an eye on the children.

But when everyone is watching…

Often, no one is truly watching because everyone is relying on everyone else doing it.

One of the simplest ways to make gatherings around water safer is to choose one designated Water Watcher whose only job is supervising the children. No phone. No conversations. No distractions.

After 15 minutes, when it’s time for a break for that watcher, hand that responsibility to another adult so there’s never any confusion about who’s watching.

💥BIG NOTE: make sure someone is still watching during break times or when you are packing up to leave the pool. Most children who drown do so during the times they are at supposed to be in the water.

As we head into one of the busiest boating and swimming weekends of the year, please make water safety your top priority.

🇺🇸 𝗛𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀:

💙 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿. One sober, undistracted adult should be responsible for watching the water at all times. No phones. No conversations. Switch every 15–20 minutes. “If everyone is watching, no one is”.

💙 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗿𝗺'𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗼𝗿 𝗻𝗼𝗻-𝘀𝘄𝗶𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻.

💙 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝘁𝘆 𝗸𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗶𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 & 𝗽𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗽𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝘁𝗼𝘆𝘀 after use, and keep gates closed and latched.

💙 If you need flotation for safety, choose a properly fitted 𝗨.𝗦. 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗚𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗱-𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗷𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁 (𝗣𝗙𝗗).U.S. Skip floaties and puddle jumpers.

💙 𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗷𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝗼𝗹, 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗶𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮. Don’t remove it for snack breaks, bathroom breaks, or “just a minute.” Those transitions are when many accidents happen.

💙 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗖𝗣𝗥. Every parent, grandparent, and caregiver should learn it.

💙 𝗟𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿: supervision, barriers, alarms, life jackets when appropriate, and quality swim lessons all work together.

Remember, 𝗱𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁 & 𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁. It doesn’t look like the dramatic scenes portrayed in movies. A child can slip beneath the surface in seconds.
