Imposter Syndrome Isn’t a Problem; It’s a Signal
Most treat imposter syndrome as an issue to solve before advancing. For example, right before a big promotion or an important presentation, it's common for doubts to surface and for people to feel they need to overcome these feelings before moving forward.
What if, instead, it’s actually evidence that you’re growing?
Imposter syndrome tends to appear at key moments: when your visibility increases, when your responsibilities expand, or when you enter a room where you don’t yet feel fully established. Even people who are seen as accomplished or experienced encounter these doubts when they reach for something new. In other words, it doesn’t show up when you’re playing small, but when you’re stretching.
The feeling itself isn’t the problem. The meaning you assign to it is.
If you interpret it as “I’m not ready,” you pull back.
If you interpret it as “I’m expanding,” you lean in.
At every new level in business, there is a gap between who you’ve been and who you’re becoming. That gap feels unfamiliar, and unfamiliar often gets labeled as “not qualified.”
But growth rarely feels like confidence at first; it feels like uncertainty paired with responsibility.
So, the goal is not to eliminate the feeling. Instead, recognize it for what it is: a signal you are moving into something bigger. One simple way to turn this insight into growth is to write down when and where these moments show up for you. Reflect on what triggered them and the opportunities they might point to. You could also discuss these feelings with a trusted colleague or mentor, which can often help you see your growth more clearly and find encouragement to keep moving forward.
Let me ask you...
Where in your business are you feeling like an imposter, and what if that’s actually the clearest indicator of your next level? Identify one specific situation where these feelings show up. What is one small step you could take to move forward anyway?
