Once the elongation portion is complete, the next step is evaluating the bond between the sealant and the substrate. The goal is to determine how the sealant fails.
There are two possible outcomes:
✔️ Cohesive failure – the sealant tears within itself while remaining bonded to both substrates. This indicates the adhesive bond is stronger than the sealant itself and is the desired result.
❌ Adhesive failure – the sealant pulls away from one of the substrates, indicating a problem with the bond that may be related to installation, surface preparation, or other project conditions.
In this example, the sealant failed cohesively while remaining fully adhered to both sides, resulting in a passing ASTM C1521 test.
