✨️A Hidden Gem in Plain Sight: Club Deuce Bar! 💎✨
Club Deuce is the oldest bar in Miami established in 1926 and named this way because of its address at 222 14th Street.
🎖A WWII Veteran Owns the Bar🎖
Mac Klein, the owner, was born in 1914. Klein was deployed to Europe for World War II and was among the first American soldiers behind enemy lines. He got two N**i Luger bullets in him and after a year in an English hospital, he needed warm weather. Klein moved to Miami Beach in the mid-‘40s and soon became a regular at Club Deuce. Two decades later, in 1964, he purchased the bar.
💎Cocaine, Don Johnson and Neon Lights: The ‘80s💎
In the ‘80s, Miami Beach transformed from a sleepy town full of elderly into the nation’s co***ne capital at the same time when a pastel-clad duo named Sonny Crockett and Rico Tubbs turned the world’s attention to Miami.
Miami Vice was in town at exactly the same time as the co***ne cowboys and they were killing each other on the streets. People snort co***ne off the bar in those days. The phone was in the back so nobody would see the bartender when he needed to call the police. If Miami Vice was filming at the beach, they would go to Club Deuce for drinks after the wrap of the episode.
Miami Vice put in all the pink and green neon in the bar when they used Mac’s as a location in the ‘80s. The agreement was that the neon would stay when they were done filming. The neon décor survives up to this day.
Miami Vice filmed multiple scenes inside Mac’s Club Deuce and when the series came to a close in 1990, the cast threw their goodbye party at the Deuce. Don Johnson got behind the bar and said, "Here it is. Let's have a party."
👑 Celebrities 👑
The Deuce has always been a magnet for celebrities who found themselves in South Beach. From Humphrey Bogart to John Travolta. Matt Dillon, when they filmed There’s Something About Mary, frequented the bar with Cameron Diaz a few times. Kate Moss was almost denied entry because she did not have her ID but was eventually allowed in, and Quentin Tarantino drank a lot of Jäger.
In 2006, chef and TV host Anthony Bourdain featured the Deuce on his Travel Channel show No Reservations, calling it one of his “favorite places on Earth.” He would feature Mac’s two more times on his show The Layover in 2011 and Parts Unknown in 2015. Guy Fieri also said Club Deuce was his favorite bar.
Mac Klein celebrated his 101st birthday in the joint on September 19, 2015 and that day every drink was 1 dollar and 1 cent. He passed away in 2016. His wife Mary continues running the show and Mac’s legacy.
Find a selection of craft and domestic beers and plenty of hard liquor. From 8AM to 5PM, all drinks are two-for-one. After that, the bar stays open for another ten hours till 5AM. Oh and bring cash — the Deuce accepts legal tender and nothing else.
