En 1930, un gremio de mujeres católicas le escribió a la esposa del presidente Florencio Harmodio Arosemena, Hercilia de Arosemena, para pedir que el Día de la Madre se cambiara del 11 de mayo al 8 de diciembre, día de la Inmaculada Concepción.

La petición se envió a la Asamblea Nacional, aunque la misma contó con algo de desacuerdo dado que podía convertir el Día de la Madre en una fiesta religiosa. El diputado Aníbal Ríos sugirió pasar el Día de la Madre al 8 de diciembre, pero sin resaltar el hecho religioso de la Inmaculada Concepción, el cambio de día se aceptó a través de la Ley 69 del 18 de diciembre de 1930, declarándose el 8 de diciembre como día para homenajear a todas las madres panameñas.

In 1930, a union of Catholic women wrote to President Florencio Harmodio Arosemena's wife, Hercilia de Arosemena, to request that Mother's Day be changed from May 11 to December 8, the day of the Immaculate Conception.

The petition was sent to the National Assembly, although it had some disagreement given that it could turn Mother's Day into a religious holiday. Deputy Aníbal Ríos suggested moving Mother's Day to December 8, but without highlighting the religious fact of the Immaculate Conception, the change of day was accepted through Law 69 of December 18, 1930, declaring it on December 8. December as a day to honor all Panamanian mothers.
