What is Obama Care/Affordable Care Act?

"Obamacare" is the nickname for the Affordable Care Act (ACA), a health care reform law signed by President Barack Obama in 2010. The goal was to make health insurance more affordable and accessible for Americans, especially those who were uninsured or had trouble getting coverage due to pre-existing conditions.

Here are some of the key points:

🔑 Main Features of Obamacare:
Health Insurance Marketplaces
Created online exchanges where people can compare and buy insurance plans, often with government subsidies if they qualify based on income.

Medicaid Expansion
Gave states the option to expand Medicaid to cover more low-income people (though not all states chose to do this).

Coverage for Pre-existing Conditions
Insurance companies can’t deny you coverage or charge you more because of a pre-existing condition.

Individual Mandate (Now Repealed)
Originally, there was a requirement that most people must have health insurance or pay a fine. That penalty was removed in 2019.

Essential Health Benefits
Insurance plans must cover certain services like emergency care, maternity care, prescription drugs, and mental health services.

Young Adults on Parent’s Plan
You can stay on your parents’ insurance plan until you turn 26.
