Felsefe, Tıp ve Hukuk adlı bir dizi resim için Gustav Klimt, Viyana Üniversitesi tarafından 1900’den 1907’ye kadar Büyük Salon için ayrıntılı bir tavan resmi yapmakla görevlendirildi. Bu nehrin suyundan içen ölü ruhlar dünyada yaşamış oldukları her şeyi unuturlar. Klimt bir üniversite duvarı için yaptığı bu resimde tıp bilimini belli belirsiz bir yaşam ve ölüm ile anlatmıştır.

Gustav Klimt was commissioned by the University of Vienna from 1900 to 1907 to paint an elaborate ceiling of the Great Hall for a series of paintings titled Philosophy, Medicine and Law. However, these pictures were later removed because they were deemed inappropriate for public morality. The focal point of this painting called “Medicine” is the female figure in the center of the painting, making eye contact with the viewer. This figure is Hygieia, the goddess of health in mythology. She stands with the snake in her hand and the glass of Lethe. Lethe is one of the rivers flowing in the underworld of Hades in Greek mythology. Dead souls who drink the water of this river forget everything they experienced in the world. In this painting he painted for a university wall, Klimt described medical science with an uncertain sense of life and death.
