Keep Port St. Lucie Police Sgt. Eric Levasseur in prayer! He is currently in surgery, and officials are optimistic about his prognosis, but God has the last say-so!! He was shot in the face while responding to a mental health-related disturbance on Monday evening, December 1, 2025.

Incident Location: Town Park community in Tradition, Port St. Lucie.
Time: The call for service came in a little after 6 p.m..

Response: Six officers responded to a home regarding a neighbor dispute that involved a mental health component.
Confrontation: Officers were met by the suspect, an adult male, holding what appeared to be an AK-47 assault rifle, and shots were fired almost immediately.

Casualties: Sgt. Levasseur was shot in the face. The suspect was shot and killed at the scene.
Condition: Sgt. Levasseur was transported to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital and is currently in surgery. Police Chief Leo Niemczyk stated they are "very optimistic" about his recovery.
Investigation: The shooting is still under investigation, but authorities have secured the scene and confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the community.

Chief Niemczyk described the incident as the "notification that you just dread everyday" and asked for prayers for the sergeant and his family. Sgt. Levasseur is a 27-year veteran of the force.
