250 years ago, America made a bet.
Not just on democracy. On curiosity. On the idea that a free people, given the tools to learn and discover, could build something the world had never seen.
Universities were part of that bet from the beginning and they still are.
Every graduate who goes on to heal, to build, to lead. Every research breakthrough that changes what’s possible. Every student who walks across a stage and changes the story of their family forever.
That’s not separate from the American experiment. That is the American experiment. On this 250th birthday, FIU is proud to be part of it. 🇺🇸
What does America’s next 250 years look like to you?

Are earthquakes happening more often? The data says no.
Earth experiences 150–300+ earthquakes daily. That frequency hasn't changed. Our awareness has—thanks to sensors, smartphones, and connectivity.
The rare part: Venezuela's strongest earthquake in 125+ years was actually two, known as a doublet—7.2 then 7.5, just 39 seconds apart.
FIU researchers are using satellite geodesy to track crustal deformation, potentially revealing where stress is building longer before future quakes.
More than 900 people died in the Venezuela earthquakes. Our thoughts are with those affected. Read more about the science and learn how you can help the victims.
