For 125 years, the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne have provided free, compassionate care to terminal cancer patients. Now, the sisters are taking legal action against a New York State law, saying it violates their right to freely exercise their religion, as well as Catholic teachings on gender identity. State officials are warning them and other nursing home administrators about restricting rooms and bathrooms to one s*x and failing to use preferred personal pronouns for patients who identify as transgender. The state is also requiring public postings of an anti-discrimination notice:
