In 1683, the world's first public museum, the Ashmolean in Oxford, opened its doors. Since then, museums have become central to society. Museums play an integral role in not only preserving history, but providing a safe space for the healthy exploration of ideas that educate and inspire. As an active participant in the artworld, Tresart understands the importance of preserving and supporting the institutions that work tirelessly to bring us together and help us nurture our appreciation of art.

This month, we bring to you “Support Museums,” the first installment of our new series, a group of short texts dedicated to highlighting and supporting artmaking and the cultural organizations that connect art and society. Presented in our Summer Show: Gestural Brushstrokes, Jordy Kerwick (Australian, b. 1982) is a France-based visual artist known for his raw, thickly impastoed works that explore the space between still life, abstraction, and landscape. To achieve his distinctive style, Kerwick embraces many different materials and combines a vivid palette with bold and powerful strokes. Through his work, Kerwick explores fantastical elements from his imagination combined with historical references, ancient iconography, and pop culture that all result in visually rich surreal compositions.

Amoako Boafo’s career trajectory has been truly mesmerizing. This contemporary artist keeps massively shaking up the art world with his empowering black figurative paintings. His is the recipient of the Walter Koschatzky Art Prize in 2017 and artist in residence at the Rubell Museum in 2019. By 2020, he was already featured in “The Most Influential Artists of 2020.” But, did you know…?

· Boafo collaborated with fashion house Dior for the SS21 men's wear collection featuring Amoako's unique way of representing Blackness.

· Boafo's The "Suborbital Triptych" (2021) was the first painting to be launched into space, reaching unprecedented grounds.

· Boafo made headlines in 2021 when his painting "Hands Up" (2018) broke his auction record price selling for $3,423,258 at Christie's Hong Kong.

Showcased at Tresart’s “Winter Show: Condo, Scharf, and Schnabel,” Kenny Scharf (b.1958) is an iconic painter and street artist. His graffiti works gained him notoriety for his stylized cartoons that featured aliens and popular culture icons in tessellated, colorful patterns. Taken together, his popular culture-based imagery with made-up science-related backgrounds, represent the intersection of art and street culture, working together to push the line between high and low art.
