Global Coralition es una organización sin fines de lucro que une el arte, la ciencia y a las comunidades locales para acelerar la restauración de arrecifes de coral en regiones que experimentan colapso del ecosistema marino.
Actualmente estamos trabajando en Sosua, República Dominicana, donde, desde los 80 los arrecifes han disminuido del 60 al 10% de cobertura coralina. Las causas de la degradación de los arrecifes son principalmente causadas por la sobrepesca y la contaminación del medio ambiente.
Estamos lanzando un proyecto de restauración de arrecifes de corales construyendo un arrecife artificial en forma de una escultura llamada Atabey. Atabey es la Madre Universal del pueblo taíno, que son los pueblos indígenas de centro América. En la historia Taina, Atabey dio a luz al Océano. Esta es la razón por la cual se decidió usar a Atabey como base de este arrecife artificial.
La escultura de Atabey tiene 15 pies de altura, y será puesta sobre una base de 5 pies, lo que la convierte en la escultura submarina ¡más alta del mundo! Estamos practicando la micro-fragmentación, una técnica científica que aumenta el crecimiento del coral hasta 50 veces más rápido que en su forma natural. Estos corales se cultivan en nuestro vivero y luego se trasplantan en y alrededor de la escultura.
Estamos capacitando a la comunidad local de buceadores, pescadores y jóvenes para practicar nuestras técnicas de cultivo de coral y jardinería.
Los arrecifes de coral son un ecosistema integral para las comunidades insulares locales. Los arrecifes de coral soportan el 25% de toda la vida marina, que incluye muchas poblaciones de peces que proporcionan alimento y sustento para la gente. También absorben el 97% de la energía de las olas y las tormentas, lo que protege las costas.
Estamos en un hito muy emocionante donde Atabey se está preparando para ser integrada en la bahía de Sosua. Después de que ella esté en el océano, trabajaremos todos los días cultivando y plantando coral para nutrir el sitio en un arrecife próspero y rehabilitar los arrecifes a su alrededor.
El sitio será un destino ecoturístico, un patrimonio cultural y un área marina protegida.
Actualmente somos una organización completamente sin fines de lucro y formada por voluntarios. Necesitamos su apoyo para sumergir a Atabey el 12 de Octubre, día de los Pueblos Indígenas, Día de La Raza. Será una increíble hazaña cultural, ecológica y de ingeniería.

My name is Marcelo Evaristo Tavarez and I have lived all my life in the Dominican Republic (Quisqueya). I am aware of the problems that affect our environment, understanding all the damage we have caused to our land with massive amounts of plastic and other refuse. Carelessly discarded plastics an eyesore, but more than that, it harms the environment and disrupts our relationship with nature. As human beings, we stand both among nature and apart from nature on this planet.
The water on our island supports all the vegetation and the creatures that live here: the lush fruit trees, the wide variety of grains and vegetables, the farm animals that provide dairy products as well as meat. The rivers carry minerals and give us drinking water. The vegetation produces our air. Mother Earth sustains us and furnishes us with all her natural beauty.
Although we are a part of nature, more than any other creatures, we have the ability to affect nature and our surroundings. That is why I am developing this project to help educate people and improve the environment.
Change starts with new ideas, and our brains are the incubators that produce the concepts that become dreams that we turn into reality. I decided to offer my knowledge to contribute ideas to the solutions to again find the balance with nature. About two years ago I started to work with a foundation called Domino ong with goals of create a better ecosystem for the island, cleaning the beaches and rivers and eliminating landfills from the island. The foundation began to reach out to Cabarete in the Dominican Republic, a place with great energy and beautiful beaches. During that time, I was living on the beach, camping for almost 8 months, working daily to clean the beach and live a sustainable lifestyle. Working with locals and talking with tourists taught me much about education and attitudes: I found that many of the tourists are more knowledgeable and committed to recycling than may Dominicans. Many people offered help in the form of money, labor, food, and ideas. It helped me to dream of something bigger.
