The remote collar isn’t teaching the behavior here—it’s being paired with a behavior the dog already understands.
In this clip, the “out” (release) was first taught through trades, rewards, and repetition. The dog learned that releasing the ball leads to positive outcomes. Once the behavior was clear and reliable, we introduced low-level remote collar pressure as a cue through negative reinforcement. The pressure turns off when the dog performs the known behavior.
This is an important distinction: we don’t use pressure to teach confusion. We use pressure to reinforce clarity.
Good training isn’t about finding the right tool. It’s about understanding learning theory and applying the right tool at the right time.

🎓 Practical Training from Practical Experience
Loose leash walking and formal heeling are NOT the same thing… and most dog owners confuse the two.
Loose leash walking is about freedom with boundaries.
The dog can explore, sniff, and move naturally — as long as they aren’t dragging you down the street.
Formal heeling is precision obedience.
Position matters. Engagement matters. Every step, turn, sit, and pace change is intentional.
Both have value. Both serve different purposes.
The problem is most people try to train one while expecting the results of the other.
This video is just a short introduction to the differences between the two and WHY it matters in training.
The full breakdown, training concepts, and how we teach both behaviors are available on our Patreon subscriber page.
