You don't have a policy problem. You've got a leadership visibility problem.
Policies establish expectations. Procedures create structure. But neither creates culture on its own. Culture is built through thousands of daily interactions between leaders and workers. It's built when executives walk the floor. When supervisors coach instead of correcting. When employees feel comfortable speaking up about risks. When safety conversations happen before incidents occur, not after.
As National Safety Month comes to a close, now is the perfect time to ask:

Heat-related illnesses often develop gradually, especially in warehouses, manufacturing facilities, and other indoor environments where workers may not realize how much heat their bodies are absorbing. The best time to respond to heat stress isn't during an emergency. It's long before one begins.

What is the OSHA "General Duty Clause" and how does it relate to heat?
Even without a final specific heat rule, Section 5(a)(1) of the OSH Act requires employers to provide a workplace free from recognized hazards, including extreme heat, that are likely to cause death or serious physical harm.
How much water should I actually be drinking during a heatwave?
For moderate activity in hot conditions, NIOSH recommends drinking about one cup (8 ounces) of water every 15 to 20 minutes to stay hydrated, rather than waiting until you feel thirsty. (Don't exceed 48 ounces per hour, though!)
What are the primary symptoms that distinguish heat stroke from exhaustion?
While exhaustion involves heavy sweating and nausea, heat stroke is a medical emergency characterized by confusion, slurred speech, and often a total stop in sweating as the body's core temperature spikes.
