𧽠National Animal Poison Prevention Week β Day 2: Hidden Dangers in the Home
β Did you know? Some of the most common pet toxins arenβt outside β theyβre already in your home.
Many everyday household items can be dangerous for curious pets who love to sniff, lick, and explore.
Common hidden toxins include:
𧴠Cleaning products β Bleach, disinfectants, and toilet cleaners can cause burns to the mouth, skin irritation, vomiting, and breathing problems.
π§Ί Laundry pods & detergents β These highly concentrated detergents can cause severe stomach upset, drooling, and respiratory distress if bitten or ingested.
π Antifreeze β Even a tiny amount can be deadly. It has a sweet taste that attracts pets, but it can quickly cause kidney failure.
π― Essential oils & diffusers β Some oils (like tea tree, eucalyptus, and peppermint) can be toxic to pets, especially cats, and may cause breathing problems, drooling, or weakness.
πΎ Pet Safety Tip:
Store cleaning supplies in closed cabinets, wipe up spills immediately, and keep pets out of the area when using chemicals or diffusers.
Even small exposures can cause serious illness, so quick action is important if you suspect your pet has been exposed.
