Don’t let Summer become a set back
I understand it, sometimes kids begin to see karate as another structured activity, much like school, and when summer arrives they feel like they need a break. And that’s okay! Taking a week or two off to recharge, enjoy family vacations, and make summer memories can be healthy.
What I don’t recommend is stepping away from training for the entire summer. Here’s why:
🥋 1. Skills fade when they’re not practiced.
Martial arts training is a lot like boiling water. As long as the flame is on, the water stays hot. Turn off the flame, and eventually it cools down. The same is true with karate. After several months away, students often return having forgotten techniques, forms, terminology, and conditioning. Getting back into the routine can be challenging.
🥋 2. Martial arts is more than just another activity.
At First State Karate, we build on a foundation of small achievements that lead to lifelong success. Every belt level introduces new skills, challenges, and accomplishments. Along the way, students develop confidence, respect, focus, discipline, and perseverance. We’re not just teaching punches and kicks, we’re helping shape character. That kind of growth takes time and consistency.
🥋 3. Discipline is built on the days we don’t feel like showing up.
Let’s be honest, there are days when kids don’t want to go to karate. Adults have days when they don’t want to go to work, exercise, or tackle responsibilities. We do it anyway because we’ve learned that discipline is far less painful than regret. When children learn to keep commitments even when they don’t feel like it, they develop a mindset that serves them in school, at home, and eventually in life.
🥋 4. Stay committed to the goal that brought you here.
Whether your goal is building confidence, improving focus, learning self-defense, increasing physical activity, or helping your child become the best version of themselves, those results don’t happen overnight. Consistent training over time is what produces lasting change.
Summer should be enjoyed. Take that vacation. Spend time with family. Make memories.
But if you can avoid long gaps in training, your child will be better positioned to continue progressing, growing, and achieving their goals when fall arrives.
The students who keep showing up through the summer are often the ones who make the biggest strides.
