Learned something today.
I’ve killed enough plants over the last thirty years to know what actually matters, and mostly, it's just getting out of their way. Rhubarb is brilliantly self-sufficient. But every spring, I see folks heading out to their patch with a sharp kitchen knife. I used to do exactly the same thing. Slicing them off low to the ground feels like the proper, tidy way to harvest. Turns out, slicing those thick stalks does two terribly unhelpful things. First, it leaves an open, slow-healing wound right at soil level—essentially rolling out the red carpet for crown rot. Second, leaving that little cut stub behind actually tricks the plant into stopping its harvest altogether. There is a completely different, totally tool-free way you're actually supposed to harvest them. It takes about two seconds, keeps the crown perfectly clean, and sends a clear signal to the plant to immediately push up a fresh, juicy batch of stalks. I haven't used a blade on my patch in years. Put the garden shears away, and do this instead.
