While renting may be less expensive in some areas right now, there are two big benefits homeownership provides that renting can’t.

Owning a home means you get to say goodbye to rising rents and hello to stability. While some homes may be a bit more you'll still see less rising costs than renting. I have seen a rise of about 15% in many areas for rent over the last couple years and we all know it won't ever go down.

It also gives you the chance to gain equity as home values rise over time. For instance I bought my first home in Spring of 2018 in North Minneapolis which is a area that didn't see the price hikes that many other areas did and it's still worth over $60k more than when I bought it!
