Hello everyone! This is the second piece from the Op. 1 collection. This set of 24 preludes was written in the early months of 2019 (with a few exceptions) and the pieces are primarily in the Romantic or Impressionist style.
There is a storm brewing on the horizon and the ship is starting to be tossed about by waves which can be heard rolling in the left hand. The captain calls for the sails to be furled lest they be torn to shreds by the gale force winds. They have endured many storms before, but this is unlike any "The Tempest" has encountered.
The men try to lift their spirits with tales of what has come before and the acts of heroism which have helped them to survive. Their bravado is cut short as the storm intensifies. Lightning flashes across the sky and they realize now that there may be no coming back from this voyage.
The swells grow ever larger and cracks can be heard throughout the ship as support beams and masts give way under the tremendous stress. There is no hope of reaching the safety of land as she begins to take on water, but the crew does not abandon their posts…they do not know the meaning of surrender. A final series of cracks can be heard as "The Tempest" slips beneath the waves into the waiting abyss.

This charming little prelude was not actually the first one I wrote for this collection, but rather a replacement for the original which felt out of place with the rest of the pieces. At first glance, it appears to be a study in thirds for the right hand while the left left hand keeps a steady underlying motion, but it is much more than that. There is a feeling of a journey, as though a leaf is floating down a stream. It starts out simple enough, with an air of peace and the image of sunlight on the water. There are moments when the trees block out the sun and the leaf goes in and out of the shimmering reflections, caught in the pull of the current, but nevertheless carried along without any concern as to where it is heading.
The music takes on a minor feel as the leaf enters the rapids and is tossed about from whirlpool to whirlpool, nearly being submerged but always finding its way to the surface before finally breaking free and continuing it’s journey with the same sense of tranquility with which it began.

Hello, all! I just wanted to let you know that the concert went very well this past Sunday. The choir performed beautifully and of course Michael was amazing as usual. It was quite moving to hear the piece performed live after only ever hearing it on the computer or in my head. If the recording turns out well, I will be posting it both on my YouTube channel and here as well.
Here is a picture of the choir, and one of David Robertson, me and Michael (L-R):
