When your doctor orders a scan, there's a physician on the other end reviewing every image, writing a detailed report, and making sure your care team has what they need to take the next right step for you.

When your doctor orders imaging, you might wonder why they chose one type over another. The answer comes down to what they need to see — and how each technology sees it differently.

X-ray uses radiation to capture images quickly. It's well suited for evaluating bones and certain chest conditions and is often the first step in an evaluation.

CT combines multiple X-ray images to create detailed cross-sectional views of the body. It captures more information than a standard X-ray and works quickly — which matters in time-sensitive situations.

MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves — no radiation — to produce highly detailed images of soft tissue, organs, and the nervous system. It's particularly valuable when detail matters most.
Ultrasound uses sound waves to create real-time images. It's especially useful for evaluating soft tissue and fluid-filled structures.

Each technology answers a different kind of clinical question. Your doctor determines which one is right for your specific situation.
