Thompson that I love to live by: “Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming ‘Wow! What a Ride!’

If you want to know what that kind of absolute, unfiltered grit looks like in real-time, just look at this archival photo from 1950. That is Dean Batchelor, poking his head up out of the belly of the beast just moments before making land speed history on the white crust of the Bonneville Salt Flats.

Back then, they didn't have multi-million dollar wind tunnels or high-tech telemetry. What they had was American hot rod genius, flathead Mercury V8s, and a complete absence of fear. This streamliner was built under the mastermind direction of Alex Xydias and his legendary So-Cal Speed Shop team. Batchelor, a veteran B-17 engineer, designed that sleek, envelope aluminum skin right over a narrowed, old belly-tank lakester chassis. It was pure art wrapped around pure horsepower.

They didn't just go out there to run; they went out there to smash a myth. At the time, no hot rod had ever crossed the 200 mph barrier. It was the holy grail of the salt.But when Dean dropped into that cockpit, pinned the throttle, and let the flathead scream, history didn't stand a chance. The So-Cal Streamliner rocketed down the salt to a two-way average of 208.927 mph, clocking a blistering top speed of 210.92 mph. The barrier was broken. A new era of speed was born.

Dean would actually survive a terrifying, violent rollover in this very car later that year—a moment that rightfully convinced him to trade his racing helmet for a journalist's pen, where he went on to run Road & Track. He used it up, he wore it out, and man, what a ride it was.
