Kylie and I never paid for babysitters. We simply couldn't afford it when we were younger, and by the time we probably could afford it, the kids were old enough to not need it.

I read an article in the paper on the weekend indicating that parents are paying $60-$70 for a few hours of babysitting, with some forking out up to $500.
And... one of my kids babysat 'til midnight (from about 5pm) on the weekend and came home with about $150!!!

I know in this economy, a regular 'date night' is unachievable for many couples with young children - or for some, it's only possible because you're lucky enough to have hands-on family members who live nearby. But what happens when you're invited to a wedding? A milestone birthday you don't want to miss? A work event you and your partner are both expected to attend?

What's the going rate? Who do you bring in for the babysitting? And how do you see families affording this right now? What's your take on babysitting costs?
