This picture popped up as a FB memory today and I kind of chuckle at how much we did from a 2000 square foot shop but it also got me thinking. When I was about 12 years old I knew I wanted to race for a living one day. Didn’t have a clue how that was going to happen. I came from a very humble background. But I wanted it so bad I figured it out and ran my first race when I was about 18. At the time I thought getting to that first little dirt race was about the hardest thing I had ever done. Fast forward about 5 or 6 years and I was racing all over the south east….just figuring it out as I went. When I turned 30 my daughter had just been born and I had came to the realization that my future in racing was going to need to be working on cars rather than driving. I knew I needed to be in the NASCAR world. Once again I didn’t have a clue how I was going to do it. So I went to work figuring that out. That was a long story I won’t go into but about a year later I got my first full time paying position in racing …….making $35 a day. But I was IN. I put my head down and went to work and around 18 months later I was a crew chief in the Truck series making substantialy more than $35 a day lol. Fast forward a few years and the economy took a nose dive and the unemployment rate in racing was about 50%. I knew I needed more control over my future and I knew that was going to need to be as an owner. Once again I had no idea how. I was basically unemployed, had a wife, 2 small kids, a mortgage and somewhere around $1100 dollars in the bank. But I put my head down and figured it out. This picture was about 8 months after making that decision. We had 4 trucks, an ARCA car , 2 worn out engines and this tiny shop. A year later we moved into a 15000 square foot shop that we shared with a Cup team and went on from there. I don’t say all this to pat myself on the back , I say all this to show guys if you want it bad enough you will figure it out ……plus this is why I don’t take excuses very well. Good luck to all you out there chasing your dream ……I assure you it will be worth it one day.
