To say that I am honored by this statement does not do the gratitude I feel justice. Chief Justice Paul Newby has been at the forefront of leading our courts back to consititutional conservatives. Thank you Mr. Chief Justice for your encouragement and faith in me as a judge.

On Friday, November 15th, I was formally sworn in as a District Court Judge. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve Union County in this capacity. Thank you to everyone, especially my family, who has encouraged, supported, and guided me along the way. To the Union County Bar, thank you for placing your trust and confidence in me. I was honored to be presented to the Court by one of the greatest advocates I know and my former boss, the elected District Attorney, Trey Robison. The Honorable Jonathan Perry, our Senior Resident Superior Court Judge, administered the oath of office which was incredibly special to me because I was one of his original interns and his constant encouragement is what pushed me to attend law school.
Thank you to the Honorable Wendy Maynard, Clerk of Court, and Chief Deputy Underwood of the Union County Sheriff’s Office for opening court. To the District Court and Superior Court judges currently serving and retired, the elected officials and the Sweet Union Republican Women, I want to thank you for your unwavering support. I was humbled and truly touched to see so many of our law enforcement officers in the crowd. Thank you all for your daily commitment to keeping Union County safe. To our courthouse personnel and the Union County Sheriff’s Office, thank you for your time and hard work that made Friday one of the greatest moments of my life. I am excited and ready to serve Union County!

Yesterday morning, my husband got up, put on his Class A uniform and was gone before most had gotten out of bed. Truthfully, that’s what our days are like during a day shift rotation. But yesterday was different. It was different because the black band around his badge wasn’t for an officer tragically killed in the line of the duty across the country. It was for an officer that was murdered while confronting danger to save others in a city next door to the place we call home. It’s for four officers who selflessly gave their lives as they swore to do. By the grace of God, the officers he works with who were there are still here with us.
To those who wear the badge, it is not a part of the uniform but a part of who they are. They are called to serve, to protect and to make the world a better place. They don’t choose this profession for the salary or the schedule. They are often vilified and criticized while rarely recognized or appreciated. Most will never see the holidays, birthdays or every day moments with their own families that are missed by an officer while he/she is serving their
community. Most will never see the countless lives they’ve saved or the heartbreaking news they’ve had to deliver. Most will never know the fear and anxiety that a law enforcement spouse carries each time their officer checks on for their shift. The phone calls and knocks on the doors that those four families received on Monday is one that is undoubtedly not talked about amongst law enforcement families often; instead, you pray that it never becomes a reality for your family.
Yesterday morning, I watched my officer kiss his sleeping children goodbye, get in his patrol car and leave, on his day off, to honor Officer Eyer. While we did not know Officer Eyer, he is a hero just like Poloche, Elliott and Weeks. They are heroes. But nothing will ever be able to fix the holes that now exist in the hearts and lives of those who loved them. Nothing will ever be able to replace Dad; to replace those boots at the door. They gave it all. As a LEO wife, it’s encouraging to see the outpouring of support for law enforcement. Please do not stop once the media attention passes. These families will need support for years to come. Our communities will still call for help and need protection day and night. To those who answer the call, you matter. May you ALWAYS make it home to those who love you.
Congratulations to Goodwin for District Court Judge! This win was well deserved and I can’t wait to work with you. You have and will continue to serve this county well.
