Call to Action: Combating Gun Violence in Our Community

On June 25, 2024, a community leader called on elected officials to support collaborative efforts to address the gun violence that has long troubled our community, especially during the summer months.
Below is my response to her call, as I seek to engage our city council, staff, and community members in creating a comprehensive strategic plan.

[Dear Selina Campbell,

Thank you for your email and for your unwavering dedication to our community.
I deeply admire your commitment to addressing the gaps many of us struggle to fill.
Partnerships with organizations like yours are essential as we work proactively to tackle the rise in gun violence that often escalates during the summer.

I am eager to learn more about your initiatives and the potential of forming a Mayoral committee, spearheaded by Mayor Burns, to address this critical issue.
A committee composed of nonprofits, local elected leaders, Monroe Police, and both public and private sector partners could make substantial progress in creating a safer, more resilient Monroe.

Your work is vital, and I am fully committed to supporting your mission to ensure the safety of our community this summer.
Gun violence impacts us all, whether directly or indirectly, and it is our collective responsibility to prevent it.

Thank you again for reaching out. I look forward to collaborating with you and supporting your efforts.

Best regards,
Councilmember Franco McGee]

These issues remain a significant concern, and I am actively working to support grassroots organizations in their efforts to find alternative solutions.
Together, we can empower communities and families to end senseless violence, while improving de-escalation tactics and problem-solving skills.

Gun violence is not just a city problem; it’s a community problem.
It is our shared responsibility to address this crisis.

Who is willing to join me in forming a strategic plan to move forward and make our city safer for everyone?
