We presented this chair at the Seattle Antiques Road Show stop Aug 18 2012. The pro's could not identify it's origin. Perhaps American from Philidelphia, French, or Italian. After three pro's climbed over the chair the word was they were stumped. Most likely 1810-1830 Empire perhapse older? Value $1,200-$50,000.
Good News! Our antiques Roadshow expert gave a good direction. Sebastian Clarke Senior Vice President Doyle New York Auctioneers, suggested looking in a book on antique Italian Furniture. There on page 168 was our chair. noted as built in 1822 for the Palazzo Pitti, (Pitti Palace) Florance Italy. The carver is listed as is the builder and the gilder. Also noted is that four armchairs are missing from the original set that is still in the Royal Palace. The new estimate is...$10-15,000.00 The chair is on it's way to New York sale in October.
Prior to the sale we were successful in identifying the chair's history.
This chair can be positively identified to have been made for the Palazzo Pitti, Royal Apartments. These apartments were re-furnished by the sister of Napoleon, Elisa Baciocchi. A Note in the book cites that "Four armchairs have been lost" She was the sister of Napoleon Bonaparte.
