๐ป "She's Leaving Home" โ The Beatles (1967)
No guitars. No drums. Just harp, strings, and two of the greatest voices in rock history telling a story that breaks your heart in under four minutes. ๐ฎโ๐จ
Paul wrote it from a real newspaper story about a runaway teenager โ who, as it turns out, had actually met him years before. The coincidence is almost too strange to believe. ๐คฏ
John as the grieving parents. Paul as the narrator. The tension between those two voices? Absolutely devastating. ๐โจ
Sgt. Pepper's finest moment, and that's saying something. ๐๐ถ

๐ธ Paul McCartney wrote it that morning while walking the streets of London โ and hid a drug reference inside it that the censors never noticed.
"She's a Woman" was conceived by McCartney while walking the streets of St. John's Wood on October 8, 1964 โ and recorded at Abbey Road that same afternoon, the B-side to "I Feel Fine." ๐ค
The song was perhaps the first Beatles record to contain a drug reference โ "Turn me on when I get lonely" was reportedly Lennon's line, added after The Beatles had been introduced to cannabis by Bob Dylan just six weeks earlier on August 28. Lennon later said he was pleased the censors never picked it up. ๐The Beatles - She's a Woman ๐ถ โค๏ธ Listen now in the ๐๐ฌ๐ญ ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ! ๐๐

๐ธ George Harrison wrote this after discovering that the British government was taking most of The Beatles' money. Paul McCartney played the guitar solo. And the music was inspired by the Batman TV theme.
George Harrison said: "'Taxman' was when I first realized that even though we had started earning money, we were actually giving most of it away." Britain's Labour government had just won a landslide re-election and immediately raised taxes on the country's highest earners to the point where successful musicians became tax exiles. ๐ทThe Beatles - Taxman ๐ถ โค๏ธ Listen now in the ๐๐ฌ๐ญ ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ! ๐๐

๐ธ John Lennon called it the best lyric he ever wrote โ then spent years furious that The Beatles never recorded it properly.
The opening line came to Lennon one night in 1967 while lying in bed, listening to his wife Cynthia talk โ irritated, his mind drifting โ when suddenly the words "flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup" arrived and wouldn't stop. He got up and wrote the whole song. ๐The Beatles - Across the Universe ๐ถ โค๏ธ Listen now in the ๐๐ฌ๐ญ ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ! ๐๐

Think for Yourself โ George Harrison's first non-love song, and Paul McCartney ran his bass through a fuzzbox to give it that distinctive growl. ๐ธโจ
Released on Rubber Soul in December 1965 โ Harrison stepping out of the boy-girl formula and writing about something sharper: independence, skepticism, and not letting anyone else do your thinking for you. The vocal rehearsals even made it into the Yellow Submarine film. ๐ถ๐ค
The quiet Beatle had a lot to say when he put his mind to it. ๐ค

๐ฟ Paul wrote it about Linda. But when John sang it with him, it became something else entirely.
"Two of Us" was written about Paul and Linda driving aimlessly through the English countryside, getting deliberately lost. McCartney literally sat in his Aston Martin with the door open and his feet hanging out, guitar in hand, writing the song while Linda wandered off into the woods. You Know What to Do โ George Harrison recorded this demo while Ringo was in hospital, the tape got misfiled, and it sat forgotten for 30 years. ๐๏ธ
The other Beatles and George Martin weren't impressed. It discouraged Harrison from writing again for nearly a year. Paul McCartney later called it an "undiscovered nugget" โ not a masterpiece, but a quiet little piece of history hiding in a box since 1964. ๐ถโจ
Even the Beatles had songs that almost disappeared forever. ๐ค

๐ธ They tried it with electric guitars. It didn't work. Then they switched everything to acoustic โ and discovered what the song had been all along.
Recording began February 25, 1964 โ George Harrison's 21st birthday. Two electric takes were attempted and abandoned. The next day they tried 17 more takes โ this time with Harrison and Lennon both switching to acoustic guitar, and Ringo Starr swapping his drum kit for bongos. Two final takes on February 27 completed the song. ๐๏ธโจThe Beatles - And I Love Her ๐ถ โค๏ธ Listen now in the ๐๐ฌ๐ญ ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ! ๐๐
