Pittsburgh Named Best City for First-Time Homebuyers

A study conducted by online loan marketplace LendingTree found that Pittsburgh was one of two cities determined to be the best for first-time homebuyers.
The Steel City was tied for first with a nearby rival — Cleveland. Oklahoma City took third place.
The study ranked each city's performance across six categories: the average down payment amount, the average down payment percent, the share of buyers using FHA mortgage, a measurement of how much homebuyers are saving by using FHA loans, percentage of buyers who have credit scores below 680, and the Housing Opportunity Index score for the area.
While Pittsburgh did not rank at the top in any of the measurements — or even in the top three for any of them — it still came out on top. The average down payment amount for the metro area was $34,049 with the average down payment percent of 15 percent. The share of buyers using an FHA mortgage was 36.5 percent. The average FHA down payment as a percentage of average down payment for all loans — which measures how much homebuyers are saving using FHA loans — was 31.2 percent. Those with credit scores below 680 made up 41.3 percent of homebuyers, while the percentage of houses affordable to middle-income families was 78.4
