Jasper County Announces Dr. Eric Thompson as the New Principal of Washington Park Elementary School.

At the June 9th special called business meeting of the Jasper County Board of Education, the Board approved the hiring of Dr. Eric Thompson as the new Principal of Washington Park Elementary School. Superintendent Kenny Garland made the recommendation
after a two-phase interview process involving feedback from School Governance Team members as well as district/school faculty and staff. Dr. Thompson replaces Laura
Thompson who retired at the end of the school year.
Dr. Thompson has served his entire 20+ year career in Bibb County as a teacher, academic coach, and assistant principal. He began his career at Hutchings Career Center as a science teacher and department chair. He then moved to Westside High
School as a secondary science teacher for three years. In 2017, he was promoted to academic coach at Rutland Middle School where he served for 3+ years. In March 2020, he was promoted to Assistant Principal at Central High School where he was in charge
of operations. In July 2021, he assumed the role of Assistant Principal at Rutland Middle School where he served as the school safety coordinator and testing coordinator.
He currently is serving as Assistant Principal at VIP Academy where his duties include testing and Response to Intervention (RTI).
“With over a decade of instructional leadership as a coach and administrator, Dr. Thompson’s experience will bode well for the students and staff of Washington Park Elementary School” stated Superintendent Garland. “The interview panel was impressed with his versatility and understanding of culture/climate.”
Dr. Thompson will begin his new role effective July 1, 2026.
