Understanding the purpose of Uplift Council

“The only disability in life is a bad attitude”. -Matthew Jeffers

The way your attitude is towards your sport can determine your success or failure. Here’s some ways to help keep a positive attitude:

1. Get over yourself
In sports, expressing your emotions or feelings don’t matter. You have to remember that it’s not about “you”, but what you can “do”. Take your emotions out of the equation and see the situation for what it really is without judgement. Don’t overthink.

2. Remain Coachable
Coaches love players willing to learn, not trying to teach. When you get where you think you know more than your coach, your coach will find someone else who respects their system. There will always be someone who will do what you don’t want to do. Your coach is right, even when they are wrong.

3. Stop Making Excuses
Don’t get caught in playing the blame game. The more time you spend on pointing fingers, the less time you spend on getting your mistakes corrected. You hurt yourself when you attempt to hurt others. Be accountable for your actions and fix yourself before trying to fix someone else.

4. There is ALWAYS someone better than you
You may be talented but there is always someone around the corner putting in more work than you. Never get too comfortable that you stop working on your game. Stay humble and stay locked in.

5. Get out of your own Way
Never allow your ego to keep you from being great. It’s good to be confident, but horrible to be cocky. Don’t get so high on yourself that someone has to knock you down. Stay on level ground. Don’t get too proud and don’t let your thoughts control you.

Do you or an athlete you know needs to keep their attitude in check to get the best from their game? Let’s get it under control.

It’s a wonderful feeling when you can give back to the community that raised you. I was given the honor of being the pitcher and assisting as a coach on a 8U team playing in the The City of Moss Point Youth Baseball league. It’s great interacting with the future leaders of the great city.
