Few cards in Old School affect the board as much as Royal Assassin. Once he hits, he lurks and waits, daring your opponent to attack.

This is a special set of alters for me. The first starter deck of Magic: the Gathering had a Will-O-The-Wisp as one of the two rares in the deck. I immediately fell in love with the card and have loved it for more than 30 years, it's been my favorite card.
Will-O-The-Wisp is one of those iconic cards that embodies "flavor." In mythology and D&D, a Will-O-The-Wisp is a spirit that lurks in moors, swamps, and forests. They dart about to and fro, offering the promise of safety or salvation, but they harbor an evil purpose. They slowly lure travellers or adventurers deeper and deeper off the beaten path. They can never actually be captured or killed, always juuuust a bit out of reach.
The flavor of this card, with its quote from the Ryme of the Ancient Mariner, low casting cost, 0/1 body, flying, and regeneration make it extremely difficult to deal with for over 30 years. Sure, you could use a Lighting Bolt or a Swords to Plowshares to take it out before it can regenerate, but you know damn well that worse things lurk in the darkness of the swamp....
I hope my interpretation of the art and painting around it does the card justice.

I owe a few alters to some fine folks that beat the tar out of me at Lobstercon. I had a little side deck that prior to each match was "ante." Before each match, my opponent got to draw a card and if the won the match, I'd owe them an alter of whatever the card was. A couple guys drew the Shivan that was in the deck, so here's the first of them.
And seriously, it's one of my favorite alters ever.
The Icy Manipulator came out SO GOOD!

I'll have this random pile of Old School cards with me at Lobstercon in Boston this weekend that will serve as an "ante" deck.
Before matches, I'll allow my opponent to draw and set aside one card from the deck. If they win the match, I'll provide them with a custom alter of whatever card they drew! If I win, no big deal, I just won't get better as an artist :(
Hope to see you there and maybe we'll get to play against one another!

Albert Bierstadt's 'Mount Corcoran' (c. 1877-78) holds a special place in my heart. I studied fine art at the Corcoran College of Art and Design, and the painting was among the collection of the adjoining Corcoran museum during my time there.
It stopped me in my tracks the first time I saw it. The grandeur of the mountain and trees pushed out all peripheral; I felt the warmth of the sunlight filtering in through the trees. One of Bierstadt's goals in painting these landscapes was to present the American West to those who couldn't make the arduous journey themselves. Over a 100 years later, I can't help but think I was just as mesmerized as they must have been.
The Corcoran closed it's doors in 2014, but luckily 'Mount Corcoran' found its way into the National Gallery where I've continued to visit it.

More Revised Alters down. I love the simplicity of the original land arts. Sunsets are notoriously difficult due to working with yellows, oranges, and purples. Lots of blending and experimenting to get the colors down right.
