Reminding those who didn't know that Nov. 28 was celebrated for decades as Independence Day in Hawai'i, marking the day that Great Britain and France signed a declaration recognizing Hawai‘i as a sovereign nation. It was officially celebrated from about 1844 until 1895, and unofficially for some years afterward. It was revived again in 2006.

Lōhi‘au's house platform, associated with the story of Hi'iakaikapoliopele, is still visible near the head of the Kalalau trail, opposite Kē‘ē Beach. A stone wall in the forest, now much covered by vegetation, is the front face of the site. It is in close proximity to Kē‘ē beach, but unmarked and at times obscured by the overgrowth.
