Kilauea is officially showing off this morning. Episode 51 has kicked off, triggered by a sudden summit deflation and a spike in seismic tremors around 8:30 a.m. HST.
Here is the quick breakdown of what’s happening right now:
The Action: Lava is currently blasting 100 feet (30 meters) into the air.
The Momentum: It’s steadily building steam.
What's Next: Geologists expect the lava fountains to reach their absolute peak height over the next couple of hours.

Overnight Spatter Spotted
The south vent continued to produce large flames and intermittent sprays of fine spatter caused by gas jetting.
Cyclic strong gas pistoning events with jetting, intermittent spatter, and flames associated with spikes in tremor started around 4:00 a.m. this morning from the south vent, with less pronounced cycles earlier.
Forecast models indicate that the onset of fountaining episode 50 is likely to begin between today June 25 and Saturday June 27 with Friday June 26 most likely.
