Core Concepts: Behavior Chain Analysis

In this clip from our training on Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI), we walk through how Behavior Chain Analysis (BCA) can transform how we understand and intervene with self-harming behaviors.

Rather than focusing only on what the behavior is, BCA helps us explore the why:

What led up to the behavior?

What thoughts, emotions, sensations, or environmental cues played a role?

What consequences reinforced it?

This structured approach helps clients gain clarity, identify skill use opportunities, and reduce shame. For clinicians, it’s a powerful way to connect patterns to purpose—and tailor treatment accordingly.

In our full "Understanding & Treating NSSI" course, you’ll learn how to:
-Facilitate BCAs in real-life sessions
-Identify patterns in sensory and emotional triggers
-Integrate DBT and OT-informed tools into the chain
-Move from analysis to action with clients

Core Concepts: Filing Your Cup.

In this clip from our training on NSSI, we talk about something every clinician and client should understand: the sensory system’s role in emotion regulation.

We use the metaphor of a cup to describe how the nervous system responds to stress and sensory input. When that “cup” overflows—whether from overwhelming emotions, sensory overload, or trauma triggers—self-injury can become a way to regulate or release what the body doesn’t know how to process.

By learning how to fill the cup in healthy ways—with calming, organizing, or stimulating sensory input—we equip clients with practical, body-based strategies that can reduce urges and build emotional resilience.

Want more than metaphors?
In our full "Understanding & Treating NSSI" course, you’ll learn:
-The sensory-emotional connection in self-harm
-How to use OT-informed sensory strategies in mental health treatment
-When to up-regulate vs. down-regulate
-Practical tools for emotion regulation that go beyond talk therapy

Core Concepts: The Brain's Role in NSSI.

In this clip from our full-length training on Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI), we explore why self-harm works the way it does—through the lens of the brain.

We break down how the brain's threat and reward systems are activated during acts of self-injury, and how this impacts the client’s nervous system, emotional regulation, and sense of control. Understanding this neurobiological feedback loop helps clinicians respond with more than just crisis management—it opens the door to targeted, trauma-informed care.

Ready to go deeper? Our full "Understanding & Treating NSSI" course includes:
-Brain science made applicable to real-world therapy
-The role of the limbic system, pain pathways, and emotional regulation
-DBT, OT, and sensory-informed interventions
-Functional assessments and treatment strategies
-Practical tools to reduce shame and increase safety

Core Concepts: What Is NSSI?

In this short clip from our full training on Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI), we break down the definition of NSSI.

Many clinicians encounter clients who engage in self-injury, but few feel fully equipped to respond with clarity, compassion, and clinical precision. In this clip, we introduce how NSSI functions as an emotion regulation strategy—and why understanding the function matters more than just the form.

🧠 Want to go deeper? Our full "Understanding & Treating NSSI" course covers:

-The neurobiology behind self-harm
-How to assess risk and function
-Sensory processing and somatic strategies
-DBT and OT-informed interventions
-Real case examples and treatment planning tools

Enroll now and build the confidence to support clients with self-injury.
