A Quickie Anytime

But I'm trying to break out of my bad hobbits.

This is Michigan this weekend. Penguins are crossing the border because even Antarctica is warmer right now. We've officially reached the point where the weather is so cold that it's stopped making sense. Subzero temperatures, wind chills that'll freeze your face off in under a minute, and somehow we're all still expected to go to work like this is normal.

The penguins in this picture are better dressed for Michigan winter than most Michiganders. They've got natural insulation, waterproof feathers, and zero delusions about the weather being "not that bad." Meanwhile, you've got people running to their cars in hoodies acting like 20 below is just a slightly chilly day. The penguins know better. They're waddling across the state line thinking "finally, a climate that makes sense."

This weekend, stepping outside will feel like walking into a freezer that's been set to "absolutely not." Your lungs will hurt. Your eyes will water and the tears will freeze on your face. Your car might not start. If it does start, it'll take twenty minutes to warm up and the entire time you'll be sitting there questioning every life decision that led you to live in a place where the air physically hurts.

Michiganders will still act tough about it. "Oh, it's only 10 below, that's not even that cold." Yes it is. It's objectively cold. The penguins agree. They migrated here because their natural habitat wasn't cold enough anymore, and now they're thriving while we're out here scraping ice off windshields with our credit cards because we can't find the scraper.

If you see a penguin this weekend, don't be alarmed. They're just Michigan residents now. They've adapted faster than most transplants. Welcome to Michigan, where the weather is so brutal that even Antarctic animals feel at home.
