Update on My Mom – 06/10/2026

Today marks 30 days since my mother was hospitalized.

Although I originally took her to Tidelands Waccamaw Hospital on 04/29/2026, she only stayed there one night. On 05/11/2026, I took her to MUSC in Charleston, SC, where she remained until 05/20/2026. She was then transferred to the MAYO Clinic in Jacksonville, FL. On 06/05/2026, she was discharged from MAYO and transferred to Brooks Rehabilitation Hospital in Jacksonville, where she remains today.

The good news is that she has been working hard in rehabilitation because she wants to come home so badly. She has been doing all of the physical therapy they ask of her and giving it everything she has. My brother is currently in Jacksonville with her, and he has been sending me videos of her progress. I’ve seen her slowly climbing stairs and even riding a tricycle around the rehabilitation hospital. She is determined to get stronger and make it back home.

The photos below are screenshots from videos my brother has been sending me while he’s in Jacksonville with her. Watching her work through physical therapy, climb stairs, and ride a tricycle around the rehabilitation hospital has been incredible to see. A month ago, none of us knew what the future held. Today, she’s fighting every day to get stronger because she wants nothing more than to come home.

Today, we should find out when Brooks Rehabilitation Hospital plans to clear her for discharge. She has been fighting every day to prove that she’s ready.

Medically, she continues to make progress. As of Monday, 06/08/2026, her bilirubin level was down to 6.4, which means it continues to trend in the right direction. I don’t know what it is today, but we’re encouraged that it has continued to decrease. For comparison, when she was first hospitalized, her bilirubin level was approximately 48.5, while normal levels are generally around 1.2. Seeing that number fall from nearly 50 to 6.4 is a huge improvement and a sign that her liver continues to heal.

We’re still unsure whether she will need to continue dialysis after she comes home. That decision will ultimately be made by her kidney specialists. Once she returns home, her local kidney doctor will take over her care and, if dialysis is still needed, will refer her to a local dialysis center.

Unfortunately, while she continues to make progress medically, we’re facing another challenge. This all started in mid-April when she first became sick, and Sedgwick, the company that handles Short-Term Disability claims for her employer, still has not approved her claim.

The social worker at the MAYO Clinic submitted the paperwork they requested on time, but now Sedgwick is saying that documentation is not enough and that additional forms must be completed. After doing some research, it appears that many people have experienced similar issues with Sedgwick. A simple Google search reveals countless complaints from others facing the same delays and paperwork requests.

As of yesterday, we have 30 days to provide the additional paperwork Sedgwick is requesting. The problem is that most of the doctors’ offices we’ve spoken with have been unwilling or unable to complete the forms. At this point, we’re not really sure what our next step is.

Because of these delays, my mother has now gone nearly two months without receiving a paycheck.

I returned home on Friday night, 06/05/2026, and my brother arrived in Jacksonville that same evening to take over for me. For now, we’re continuing to take things one day at a time and hoping for more good news soon.

Thank you again to everyone who has donated, shared our fundraiser, sent messages, and kept our family in your thoughts and prayers. Your support has helped us more than you know.
