8:45 AM THURSDAY TROPICAL STORM IAN UPDATE

Ian is now a tropical storm and will head back over water soon. Wind shear and dry air favor weakening while the position of a trough and warm water suggest slight strengthening. These parameters counter one another so likely little change in strength with Ian up through landfall most likely near Charleston tomorrow afternoon. Bottomline, Friday is going to be a very nasty day.

RAIN: 3-7 inches (Heavy at times Friday. Ends Friday late evening. Looks mostly dry Saturday.

WIND: 40-50 mph (few gusts to 55). Ramping up Friday morning, peaking Friday afternoon and evening. Subsiding overnight.

TORNADO: small risk Friday afternoon and evening.

SURGE: 2-4 feet Friday a few hours either side of high tide around 11:15am and 11:30pm.
