When I was shopping for a present for a friend's new dog at a pet shop, I met Gabby who was brought in to work by an employee. Her dog had puppies with the neighbor's dog and Gabby was the last of the resulting puppies. When I went to hold her, she immediately Velcro-ed to me and I knew I had to have her. At first, I thought she was going to be a timid dog but about 2 days later she came out of her shell and owned the place! She was an alpha dog who was the boss wherever she went.

Jack quickly became her dad. She loved early morning walks with him before he took the train to Chicago and sleeping on his head during thunderstorms.

Gabby was the best (and a little reluctant) big sister to first Mary Kate and then Sean and Gavin. Mary Kate called her "Bop" as a baby and nothing could make her more mad or Gabby more happy than snatching some of Mary Kate's lunchtime foods. Gabby would often steal Sean's gloves off in the snow, also making him furious. And there wasn't a board game or puzzle she didn't want to run through when it was set up on the floor. Gabby wasn't a kid dog necessarily, but she loved "her" kids. When Gavin was a baby she slept faithfully behind the rocker in his room, even once letting us search the whole house for her while she slept there. Gabby was always patient with the kids, only drawing the line when they were learning to walk for fear of them falling on her (which luckily they never did!). Once our fence needed repairing and she managed to get out, leave her collar behind, and run to a nearby grocery store. The employees saw her go right up to an older woman and go home with her. Luckily the woman took her to animal control when she realized she belonged to someone, right as I was calling them to see if someone found her. Everyone had a good laugh about how she must have just wanted a break from the kids.

Those we love don't go away. They walk beside us every day. Unseen, unheard, but always near. Still loved, still missed and forever dear.

Rest well, sweet Molly
