Researchers from the University of Newcastle in Australia found that even a small scratch on a non-stick pan can release around 9,100 microplastic particles. If the coating is damaged more severely, up to 2.3 million microplastic and nanoplastic particles could be released into food and the surrounding cooking area.

Published in Science of The Total Environment, the study emphasizes the need for caution when using non-stick cookware. To reduce the risk of contamination, researchers recommend avoiding metal utensils that can damage the surface and suggest switching to more durable alternatives like stainless steel or cast iron.
