Wow
To be honest, this one hurts.
Many of us were watching last night when Knox County Sheriff's Office (Tennessee, not Maine) Deputy Dalton Swanger was viciously attacked in on live TV during On Patrol: Live. What started as a shots fired call ended with a senseless act of violence that left Deputy Swanger critically injured…and left thousands of viewers, officers, and families across the country stunned.
While clearing the area, he was struck in the head by a rock or brick thrown by a suspect, an act of violence so sudden and so vicious it left him critically injured.
No warning. No time to react. Just an ambush captured live on national television.
To say it shook us would be an understatement. It is a reminder, seen in real time by a nationwide audience, of just how fast things can change in this job. One second you are handling a call. The next, your brothers and sisters are dragging you to safety…praying for you to open your eyes…hoping you can get up. Last night, Deputy Swanger could not. Not after the blow that struck him.
And yet, in the moments that followed, his fellow deputies stepped up without hesitation. They dragged him out. Rendered aid. Took control of the chaos. That kind of response is instinct. It is training. But most of all, it is heart.
Deputy Swanger remains in critical condition this afternoon. Knox County Sheriff’s Office is working hard to keep everyone updated. Our thoughts, our prayers, and every bit of support we have is with Deputy Swanger, his family, and the Knox County team.
This was an attack on one of our own. An attack on the uniform. It is a reality check for every officer out there that the dangers are always real, always present, and no one is immune.
To the public, know this…officers across the country watched this unfold in real time, powerless to change the outcome, but united in the weight of it. We felt it in our stomachs. We felt it in our chest. We felt it because we know what it means to walk into the unknown with only your training and your partners beside you.
We will not stop doing the job. We will not stop standing together. We will not stop training to protect each other and the public.
When you ask why law enforcement sometimes takes control of a situation quickly and with force, this is why. Because danger can come without warning. Because if we hesitate, it can cost lives. It will not always look pretty or friendly, but it is done to prevent moments like this one.
For now, Deputy Swanger, we are all behind you. We are with you in thought and in prayer.
