This is a wordy post, but it’s an important one.
One of the most common misconceptions about speech-language therapy is that we’re “just playing.” But play is the therapy. While a child is engaged in something meaningful and motivating, an SLP is simultaneously modeling language, expanding communication, building interaction skills, supporting comprehension, creating opportunities to communicate, and so much more.
This post breaks down some of what is happening behind the scenes during play and why play-based therapy is such a powerful way to support development.

I had a great time with the wonderful group of moms that make up the .esterobonita 🩷 We enjoyed a summer-themed story, got creative with popsicle crafts, served up treats at our pretend ice cream stand, explored nature on a scavenger hunt, and enjoyed time on the playground.🍦☀️🦋🌴

Another sweet morning of connection, play, language-building, and supporting social communication. I only captured clips of my own kids again to respect everyone’s privacy, but it was so special watching these little moments unfold.
Little Connections was created by a speech-language pathologist to be an intentionally small, supportive space where little ones can play, connect, build language, and grow together ✨

Little Connections Play Group is a play-based social communication group led by a pediatric speech-language pathologist for children ages 18 months–3 years 💛
This group is designed to support early pragmatic language, play, interaction, and connection through engaging activities and peer experiences.
While this is not speech-language therapy, it can be a wonderful supplement to therapy services your child already receives or a great way to support communication growth while waiting for services.
Day one of Little Connections Play Group 💛
Today was our first intentionally small, SLP-facilitated play group which focused on connection, play, and supporting social communication through everyday interactions. I only captured a few clips during set up (mostly of my own kids to respect everyone’s privacy), but it was a special morning.
