Static Bed Thoughts (repost from Engine Company Resurrection)
The question often gets asked, Why the preference for this over pre connects?
First, one of the least thought out reason is tempo, the static bed forces us to engage our brain and slow down, visualize the stretch, estimate the stretch, and be purposeful with the stretch. With the ability of the nozzle being able to be taken directly to our drop point we don’t have to get caught in the pre connects conundrum that often happens, how do I get rid of this hose that I don’t need or do we have to spot the rig in a specific place to make a pre connect work.
Stretch short assurance-The static bed allows us to maintain our working length while in transit to our drop point without “flaking” line off what we may need. If we stretch short it’s easy for the driver to simply pull another length off the bed, no Chiksan swivels to deal with, additional connections, etc.
Every stretch is built to order-With the static bed we have variability and versatility, our job is making unknowns become knowns, we are in the craft of variable reduction. With a static bed we can easily conquer short, long, and vertical stretches without having to manipulate the system to accomplish a stretch. The static bed should be free of gated wyes or other unnecessary appliances. At most a reducer of 2 1/2 is used in the system.
To put it quite simply, a static bed can do everything a pre connect can, but a pre connect cannot do everything a static bed can.
