The Ford "430" engine, also known as the MEL (Mercury-Edsel-Lincoln) engine, was used in Top Fuel racing, but the motor used by Top Fuel racers was actually a 430 Lincoln, not a Ford. In 1959, a Texas-based team won the NHRA Nationals Top Eliminator title using a 430 Ford/Lincoln engine and a GMC supercharger, which was the first time a supercharged Top Eliminator entry won in NHRA history.

The 430 engine had a limited but notable history in hot-rodding. For example, Bertram Yachts won the first Miami to Nassau race with a boat powered by twin 430 MEL engines. In the 1959 NASCAR season, Holman Moody used 430s to power some of their Thunderbirds, including one that came in second place at the 1959 Daytona 500.

The 430 engine was introduced in 1957 as a base 375 horsepower model with an optional 400 horsepower 3x2 carb setup. It had a 10.75-1 compression ratio and a 4.3 bore x 3.7 stroke. The 430 engine was used in the following vehicles from 1958 to 1965: Lincoln, 1958-60 Mercury, and 1959-60 Ford Thunderbird.
