Ask most players how often they practice their overhead and you'll get the same answer: almost never. The person on the other side of the net is no different.

Changing depths is already one of the most effective patterns you can use against a defensive player because almost nobody trains for it. Push them back with a high, heavy ball, pull them forward with something short, and when they're up near the net trying to recover, lob over them and force the overhead. Now you're asking your opponent to solve a completely different problem with a shot they've almost never practiced.

Most players train lateral movement obsessively, right and left, forehand and backhand, but almost NOBODY trains moving forward and backward, and the overhead is the most neglected shot in the game as a direct result. Those two facts together add up to one of the highest-percentage patterns you can possibly use.

Start making your opponents hit overheads and watch what happens!

Most players spend their practice time on baseline rallies: left to right, right to left. That's the dimension they know and where they're comfortable.

Ask them to move forward and backward, and the whole game changes.

The drop shot pulls them in when they're set at the baseline. The lob sends them scrambling back when they've closed, and the deep, heavy ball pins them behind the baseline when they want to attack. Most players haven't built the reads or the footwork for ANY of it.

That's not a coincidence. It's a training gap you can exploit.
