‼️‼️ This Wednesday is the public hearing for the budget. Anyone in the public can voice their opinion or disagreement with how the money is being allocated. Please use your voice and ask the city council to defund the NBPD and reinvest in the community.

Here’s a full breakdown of New Brunswick’s 2020 budget. 21.4% of the budget goes towards funding the NBPD and that percentage doesn’t include other indirect costs (see the last slide). In comparison, the Department of Public Works (which houses the division of parks, division of health, youth service systems etc.) is only 8% of the budget. [graph by on IG]

The attack on Black lives is not foreign to New Brunswick. In 2011, NBPD shot and killed Barry Deloatch, an unarmed black man. The officers claimed Deloatch attempted to hit them with a wooden stick. Despite protests and support from the NAACP, the officers involved were not charged and even given paid administrative leave. We are advocating to defund NBPD because victims of police brutality deserve to get justice and nobody should killed over holding a wooden stick. (Graphic by -benz on IG)
